Microsoft® Exchange Server 2010 is the widest platform developed by Microsoft that helps users administrate their projects securely and protect all their business communication.
Once you download your certificate files provided by the Certificate authority; the next step is to save certificate files onto your server directory or computer directory.
Now, perform following step sequence to install the SSL certificate on the Microsoft Exchange Server 2010.
(1) Install Intermediate Certificate “ To Eliminate Browser Warning.
(2) Install Root Certificate “ To Ensure Identity and Trust.
(3) Install the SSL Certificate.
Step 1: Installation of Intermediate Certificate
Installation of the Intermediate Certificate is required to eliminate web browser errors while surfing your website.
Perform the following steps to install Intermediate Certificates:
(1) To open MMC (Microsoft Management Console),click on Start > Run and type MMC and press Enter. You can also do it by the shortcut key Windows + R then type MMC and press Enter. You will find console1 on your screen.
(2) Now in the menu bar click on File and select Add/remove snap-in¦
(3) Here press the Add button, a new popup window will appear named˜Add Standalone Snap-in.
(4) Look for Certificates from the list of components, select it and press the Add button. Now press the close button and then click on OK.
(5) On your screen you can see the Certificates Console for current user.
(6) To Expand Certificates options click on ˜+ button.
(7) Find and Extract Intermediate Certification Authorities.
(8) Now move to the Certificates option on ˜Intermediate Certification Authorities.
(9) In Intermediate Certification Authorities, you will need to search for the certificate type and certificate authority where youve issued your certificate: (e.g., Comodo, Symantec/VeriSign, Thawte, GeoTrust, RapidSSL, etc¦).
(i) If the certificate type &authority is available in that list then skip it for Step 2.
(ii) If it is not available then you need to add it on this list.
(10) Right click on Certificates options in Intermediate Certification Authorities, Now Hover the mouse over All Tasks and click on Import.
(11) A new Certificate Import Wizard window will appear. Now press the Next button.
(12) Browse for the intermediate certificate file name and press Next button.
(13) Now here you will see a Place all certificates in the following store option as default selection. Again press the Next button.
Now finally press the Finish button. You will get this alert message,œThe import was successful.
Step 2: Installation of Root Certificate
Installation of the Root Certificate is required to ensure authors identity and gain users trust.
Perform following steps to install Root Certificate:
(1) In MMC (Microsoft Management Console) go to Certificates (Current User) > Trusted Root Certificate Authorities > Certificates
(2) You will first need to search for your certificate authority:
(i) If the Root certificate of your certificate is present, then skip to here for Step 3.
(ii) If the Root Certificate of your certificate is not available, then you will have to add it.
(3) Now right-click on the Certificate folder, hover to All Tasks and click on Import¦
(4) Press next and then browse the root certificate file location which you have stored on your server directory or hard disk.
(5) Then press the next button. A new window will appear saying, ˜Place all certificates in the following store and on the by-default selection. Now press the next button.
In the summary window press the Finish button. An alert message will display as,The import was successful.
Step 3: Installation of SSL Certificate
You need to install the SSL certificate via the Exchange Management Console.
Perform the following steps to install the SSL Certificates:
(1) Open Start > All Programs > Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 > Exchange Management Console.
(2) The Exchange Management Console window will appear on your screen. Here first expand the Microsoft Exchange On-Premises and then click on Server Configuration located on the left side.
(3) On the Exchange Certificate section which will appear in the middle panel, you will see a friendly name which you entered while the CSR (Certificate Signing Request) was in the generation process. Highlight than name by clicking on it and then in the right panel click on Complete Pending Request.
(4) A new Complete Pending Request window will appear. Here click on the Browse button and search for the certificate file which youve stored on your server directory or hard drive and then click on Complete. Now you will see a new screen which shows the certificate information which you have selected.
(5) Check if the information is correct or not. If it is current then press the on the Finish button.
(6) Now move back to Exchange Certificates section, here you have to select a certificate from the list which you wish to install. Then click on the Assign Services to Certificate URL.
(7) A new Assign Services to Certificate screen will appear, select the Server where you wish to assign the SSL Certificate and then click on Next.
(8) The next window will be Select Service; here select the Service which you wish to secure using the SSL Certificate and then hit the Next button.
Note: Internet Informative Service will be selected as the default service, change the selection if you wish to secure another service.
(9) Now in the Assign Service window you will find the Configuration Summary of the SSL certificate, read the summary and check if it is correct. If not, then click on Assign.
(10) The Assign Services to certificate wizard will appear which loads the certificate and the complete screen. The Complete Screen will show the summary of the certificate which you have installed on Exchange Server. Now click on the Finish button.
Finally your SSL Certificate is now installed on your Microsoft Exchange Server 2010.
