A new CSI crime show had its premier lately. This new "CSI-Cyber" was about how hackers were able to take over a "Baby-Cam". This got me thinking that I should revisit Wi-Fi security for your home. It seems like every time new devices are introduced. This time they introduced their new watch that will communicate with the iPhone. By far your biggest exposure to a security breach or hacking is your home Wi-Fi and the devices that are connected to it.
So let's start with the basic security measures:
Your Wi-Fi router whether you own it or it is supplied by your cable or phone company, should have the highest security turned on and you should use a very strong password.
All of your passwords should be different and long. Do not use any dictionary words. This might be a good time to get a good password manager. If you are using the correct type of passwords you will not be able to remember them all.
Make sure that your desktop, laptop and tablets are all updated with the latest OS and patches. They should all have some type of internet security installed.
Take inventory of all your other devices, if they communicate via Wi-Fi, then you should have access to them so that you can make sure they have the latest security and a strong password.
Some of the most common Wi-Fi devices that you may find are: thermostat, door locks, baby cam, TV, stereo system, home alarm system, garage door. These are just a start to get you thinking.
If you have a newer home, you could have things like your refrigerator, microwave, cooker and other appliances that could be W-Fi.
Your Wi-Fi router and devices should have the latest WPA2 security, this encrypts the network with a 256-bit key. The longer the key the more secure. Some older routers have WPA. If your router has this you should consider upgrading your device or replacing it. Very old devices use WEP, do not use devices that have this, replace them.
Your router should have at least a 14 character password. You should consider if you want to broadcast your SID, which is in the simplest terms the name of your device. If you don't broadcast this it makes your network a little more secure.
The most important item that you have to secure your network is you. Secure your network, and be careful when on the internet and with your email.
